Alcohol No Ordinary Commodity : research and public policy / Thomas Babor, Raul Caetano. Oxford Unversity Press, 2010. (Book)
Alcohol: No Ordinary Commodity - Research and Public Policy Second Edition is a collaborative effort by an international group of addiction scientists to improve the linkages between addiction science and alcohol policy. It presents, in a comprehensive, practical, and readily accessible form, the accumulated scientific knowledge on alcohol research that has a direct relevance to the development of alcohol policy on local, national, and international levels. It provides an objective analytical basis on which to build relevant policies globally and informs policy-makers who have direct responsibility for public health and social welfare. By locating alcohol policy primarily within the realm of public health, this book draws attention to the growing tendency for governments, both national and local, to consider alcohol misuse as a major determinant of ill health, and to organize societal responses accordingly. The scope of the book is comprehensive and international. The authors describe the conceptual basis for a rational alcohol policy and present new epidemiological data on the global dimensions of alcohol misuse. The core of the book is a critical review of the cumulative scientific evidence in seven general areas of alcohol policy: pricing and taxation, regulating the physical availability of alcohol, modifying the environment in which drinking occurs, drinking-driving countermeasures, marketing restrictions, primary prevention programs in schools and other settings, and treatment and early intervention services. The final chapters discuss the current state of alcohol policy in different parts of the world and describe the need for a new approach to alcohol policy that is evidence-based, realistic, and coordinated. It will appeal to those involved in both addiction science and drug policy, as well as those in the wider fields of public health, health policy, epidemiology, and practising clinicians.

Drug Policy and the Public Good / Thomas F. Babor, Jonathan P. Caulkins, Griffith Edwards and Benedikt Fischer. -- New York, New York: Oxford Press, 2010. (Book)
Drug use represents a significant burden to public health through disease, disability and social problems, and policy makers are becoming increasingly interested in how to develop evidence-based drug policy. It is therefore crucial to strengthen the links between addiction science and drug policy. Drug Policy and the Public Good is collaboratively written by an international group of career scientists to provide an analytical basis on which to build relevant global drug policies, and to inform policy makers who have direct responsibility for public health and social welfare.

Food Justice / Robert Gottlieb, Anupama Joshi. -- Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2010. (Book)
From seed to supermarket, every facet of food production is a potential target for abuse and exploitation. Farm workers toil under inhuman conditions for low wages and no benefits, while food-processing plants operate with little regard for safety or cleanliness. Without access to proper grocery stores, many urban residents find themselves in the midst of “food deserts” that force them to rely on fast-food chains and convenience marts for a diet that is high in calories and low in nutrients. With their massive purchasing power, megastores not only drive local and regional grocers out of business, they also contribute to the failure of independent farmers already struggling to compete with agribusiness conglomerates. Meticulously chronicling the genesis of the deteriorating state of food production, distribution, and consumption, Gottlieb, a professor of urban and environmental policy, and Joshi, codirector of the National Farm to School Network, also highlight inspiring and innovative success stories at both grassroots and high-profile levels, and offer attainable examples of ways consumers, farmers, manufacturers, merchants, and legislators can correct system-wide injustices. --Carol Haggas

Do you want to teach about portrayals of women in the media? In this new, highly anticipated update of her pioneering Killing Us Softly series, the first in more than a decade, Jean Kilbourne takes a fresh look at how advertising traffics in distorted and destructive ideals of femininity. The film marshals a range of new print and television advertisements to lay bare a stunning pattern of damaging gender stereotypes -- images and messages that too often reinforce unrealistic, and unhealthy, perceptions of beauty, perfection, and sexuality. By bringing Kilbourne's groundbreaking analysis up to date, Killing Us Softly 4 stands to challenge a new generation of students to take advertising seriously, and to think critically about popular culture and its relationship to sexism, eating disorders, and gender violence.
